Media Release: May 10, 2021
At 7:52 am, Lacey Police were dispatched to 57th Way and Parkside Dr SE for a report of a black bear walking in the street. Lacey police officers spotted the bear at 56th Ave SE and Parkside Dr SE. The adult bear, estimated at over 200 pounds, was running in alleyways, in between houses and along the street.
The bear was highly mobile through a dense neighborhood. At no point did the bear become stationary to allow officers to isolate it and protect the citizens who were outside at the time including numerous families at nearby Rainier Vista Park.
Unfortunately, there was no other reasonable alternative and a Lacey Police Officer put the bear down before it could have any contact with the many citizens nearby. Fish and Wildlife responded to remove the bear.
