In Lacey, encampments are primarily located in Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) right-of-ways (the land that borders I-5). The Washington State Patrol has jurisdiction over this land, not the City. However, the City recently arrived at an agreement with WSDOT to assume enforcement authority so the areas could be cleaned. These clean ups began in October 2020 at the Sleater-Kinney location and will continue for the foreseeable future. As part of this agreement, those currently living in the encampments cannot be forced to leave, however, no new arrivals are permitted. Our Community Resources Unit (see details below) offers support to the current occupants of these lands and are slowly moving individuals into healthier housing situations.
