Citizen Police Academy

The Lacey Police Department holds a Citizen Police Academy.

Citizens Police Academy
Next Academy - September 9 - November 11, 2009
The Lacey Police Department sponsors and presents the free Citizen Police Academy annually.  The purpose of this academy is to provide community members with an inside look at the Lacey Police Department and local law enforcement.  The one night  per week (Wednesday), ten-week academy is designed to give our citizens an overview of the departments structure, services and personnel.  Although the curriculum is similar to the police academy, the sessions are not designed to make the participant a police officer.

The academy classes are taught by City of Lacey employees and Lacey Police Department employees to include patrol officers and detectives.  Participants will have the opportunity to meet with the Chief of Police and staff members. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and express their concerns.  The Lacey Police Department hopes the Citizen Police Academy will promote a greater understanding of law enforcement’s role in the community.

   Selection Process:
     • Minimum age of 21 years
     • Live or work in the Thurston County area
     • No prior felony convictions
     • Enrollment is limited. Applications must be received by August 31, 2009
     • Registration is free

Course topics covered throughout the academy will include but are not limited to the following:
     • Criminal Justice System
     • Use of Force
     • Narcotics
       Firearms
     • Interpersonal Violence
       • A day with a Lacey Police Officer

Ride-Along Program
Academy participants may be given the opportunity to ride along on a limited shift with a patrol officer. This experience will allow participants to view what an officer encounters on a first-hand basis.

CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Citizen Police Academy is to educate and inform the community on issues relative to law enforcement, provide a forum for police-community interaction and identify community problems, needs and concerns. This will foster a partnership with the community to help solve problems and work together to enhance the quality of life.
