LACEY MEETS FUNDRAISING GOAL TO CONTINUE SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM AND PLAYGROUND PALS
LACEY, WA, June 24, 2010: The City of Lacey Parks and Recreation Department announced that the "Save our Summer Food Service Program" campaign successfully met the goal of raising $12,000. By meeting the goal, the Summer Lunch Program and Playground Pals will be able to continue uninterrupted and without a reduction in services.
“The generosity of the community has been overwhelming,” stated Lori Flemm, Parks and Recreation Director. “We are fortunate to have so many individuals, groups, and organizations willing to help Lacey’s youth.”
Since 1993, the Parks and Recreation Department has sponsored the summer lunch program in partnership with North Thurston Public Schools (NTPS) to assist low-income families who meet the eligibility requirements for free or reduced school meals. The program bridges the gap during the summer months when school is out by offering hot lunch so children do not go hungry or go undernourished. Last summer, the program provided approximately 19,000 meals to children.
Kids enrolled in the program receive a free hot lunch from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. and a snack from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. When lunch is complete, the Parks and Recreation Department organizes Playground Pals, a free program that offers fun activities, arts and crafts, games, fitness, and a summer reading program during the hours of 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
This year, federal grants fell approximately $15,000 short of the necessary funds to operate the basic summer lunch program. As a result, NTPS and Lacey Parks and Recreation Department initiated a community fundraising effort to cover the gap in revenues.
Due to the community’s positive response, the Summer Lunch Program and Playground Pals will begin Monday, June 28, 2010. The program runs for eight (8) weeks, Monday through Friday, (except for July 5 in observance of Independence Day).
Three elementary school sites host the Summer Lunch Program and Playground Pals simultaneously—Pleasant Glade, Lydia Hawk, and Mountain View. For more information, call Lacey Parks and Recreation at (360) 491-0857.
