LACEY EMPLOYEE NAMED WRPA OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONAL
LACEY, WA, April 30, 2010: The Washington Recreation & Park Association (WRPA) has honored Kathy Owen, Recreation Supervisor for the Lacey Parks Department, with the association’s "2010 Outstanding Professional Award for Teen Services." Owen received the award during a ceremony at the association’s annual conference in Tacoma earlier this month.
The WRPA, an affiliate of the National Recreation and Park Association, recognizes individuals and organizations for their commitment and contributions to the field of parks and recreation.
A former high school history teacher, Owen began her career with Lacey Parks & Recreation in 1996. Since that time, she has had a significant impact within the community and across the state through her work with WRPA. Owen also serves on the PARC Foundation of Thurston County, which secures funding to support outdoor recreational experiences for young people.
In addition, Owen oversees Lacey's Activities Coalition for Teens (ACT) program, one of the most successful youth programs in the state. Upwards of 1,000 middle school students attend the program's weekly evening events, which benefit from more than 1,700 hours of volunteer support each year.
Owen also runs the city's Summer Day Camp, Playground Pals, and Counselor-in-Training (CIT) programs. The latter offers teens an opportunity to obtain valuable volunteer and public service experience.
Owen has created a legacy of recreation professionals in Thurston County. Many of the personnel in local parks and recreation departments began their careers in part-time and intern positions under her leadership.
