CITY OF LACEY RECEIVES WRPA AWARD FOR BEST SPORTS COMPLEX
LACEY, WA, April 30, 2010: The Washington Recreation and Park Association (WRPA) honored the Lacey / Thurston County Regional Athletic Complex with the "Best Sports Complex Award" during a ceremony at the association’s annual conference in Tacoma earlier this month. The WRPA, an affiliate of the National Recreation and Park Association, recognizes individuals and organizations for their commitment and contributions to the field of parks and recreation.
The city of Lacey and Thurston County jointly-acquired land for the facility in 1998, and began planning the site in 2000. The final phase of construction was completed in 2009. Designed by Bruce Dees & Associates of Tacoma, the facility also received the “2009 Design of the Year Award” from the International Northwest Parks and Recreation Association. Ceccanti, Inc. was the general contractor.
Already regarded as one of the finest outdoor sporting venues in the state, the 100-acre complex features six regulation soccer fields, including one with all-weather turf and lighting; four regulation softball fields with all-weather turf and lighting; one minor league-rated baseball field with all-weather turf and lighting; electronic score boards; two concession buildings; five large group picnic shelters; spectator seating; parking for 500 vehicles; three playgrounds; two miles of walking and jogging paths; a kite-flying hill; three half-basketball courts; and a six-acre outdoor event and festival area. In addition, nearly 20 acres have been preserved to protect native oak savannahs.
The $18.9 million complex was financed through $12.3 million in local Public Facilities District financing; $2.4 million in City of Lacey funds; $1.9 million in Thurston County Conservation Futures funding; $1.7 million in Lacey Parks Bond revenue; and $523,000 in grant funding from the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition.
Lacey’s Parks and Recreation Department, which oversees 26 park locations and facilities, manages the Regional Athletic Complex. For more information, or to book fields for practice, games, or tournaments, please call the Lacey Parks Department at (360) 491-0857.
