ROAD CLOSURE EXTENSION FOR CARPENTER ROAD SE
LACEY, WA, January 30, 2012: Due to extreme adverse weather, Carpenter Road SE will remain closed to through traffic between Pacific Avenue SE and Martin Way E until conditions permit the paving of the first or base layer of asphalt. The road was scheduled to re-open on February 1, 2012. The road closure will allow most of the work in the traveled portion of the roadway to be completed before the road is opened to through traffic.
Construction activities will continue after the road is re-opened, but traffic impacts will be minimal until paving of the final layer of asphalt in the spring. The project was originally planned for completion by this time next year. Even with the weather delay, the extended road closure is still expected to accelerate the planned completion of the entire project to as early as Spring 2012.
Local access to Malibu Drive SE, the west leg of 6th Avenue SE, and driveways along the corridor, will continue to be allowed. It is recommended to plan extra time and to use arterial streets such as College Street or Marvin Road as alternate north-south routes.
The Carpenter Road Reconstruction project will widen the roadway to four lanes with bike lanes, sidewalks, planter strips, and street lighting. The project also includes the installation of a reclaimed water main, relocation of the sanitary sewer lift station, undergrounding of overhead lines, signal modifications at Pacific Avenue SE and at Martin Way E, and wetland restoration at Woodland Creek Community Park. Construction is funded by grants from the Transportation Improvement Board and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in addition to funds from Thurston County and the City of Lacey.
