SENATOR PATTY MURRAY SECURES $500,000 FOR LACEY SENIOR CENTER EXPANSION PROJECT
LACEY, WA, July 27, 2010: Washington State Senator Patty Murray has secured $500,000 in the Senate Transportation and Housing Appropriations bill for the expansion of the Lacey Senior Center. The City plans to double the size of the current facility to 10,000 square feet in order to meet the growing demand for services. Lacey has pledged $1,000,000 towards the project and will apply for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to complete funding for the estimated $2.5 million expansion project.
Lacey Mayor Tom Nelson spoke with Senator Murray last week and expressed his sincere appreciation and thanks for her support for this project. “Senator Murray has worked hard for Lacey and has been a consistent supporter of our local transportation and urban trail improvement efforts. The Senior Center expansion project is just another example of how the Senator is working diligently to help cities improve the quality of life for their residents. We are truly thankful for her support and assistance”, noted the Mayor.
The Senior Center is located at Woodland Creek Community Park (6729 Pacific Avenue SE) and was constructed in 2004. It is owned by the City and has been managed by Senior Services for South Sound since it opened.
Daily use of the facility has increased dramatically. Meals served have grown from 5,000 served in 2005 to over 30,000 projected for 2010. The adult day care program, which serves vulnerable adults and their family caregivers, has also experienced increased demand, with waiting lists recently implemented due to lack of space at the facility.
The additional space will expand the kitchen and double the meal service capacity. The expansion project also will add critical health services programming areas, increase meeting and recreation space, provide a computer lab for senior use, and allow enhanced adult day care service for at-risk seniors.
