Living Holiday Tree Rentals Restore Habitat

‘Go Green’ this holiday season—rent your tree!  Stream Team is partnering with Puget Sound Plants to offer live holiday trees for rent, to be planted later near local streams to improve watershed habitat.

After enjoying the tree indoors or outdoors for the holidays, drop the tree off at a designated Lacey or Olympia location by January 6, 2012.  Returned trees will be cared for in a nursery until spring, and then planted by Stream Team volunteers at local restoration sites. Replanting trees next to streams provides shade to keep streams cool for salmon and other species of fish and wildlife.

Douglas fir and Sitka spruce trees are available for rent.  Four to five foot trees are $30.00; five to six foot trees are $38.00. The potted trees, weighing between 60-70 pounds, come with directions on how to care for them over the holidays.

To reserve a tree, call Puget Sound Plants at (866) 816-5080 and mention the Stream Team Holiday Tree Rental Program.  Pick your tree up from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at Puget Sound Plants, 3147 46th Ave NE, Olympia.  All trees must be ordered and picked-up by December 16.

For more information, contact Stream Team at (360) 438-2672 or streamteam@ci.lacey.wa.us.

Stream Team is a free education to action program for people interested in protecting our local streams, rivers, lakes, and Puget Sound.  Citizens learn through field classes and trainings, and then give back to the community through action projects.  Since 1990, Stream Team volunteers have donated over 65,000 hours to our community through stream re-vegetation projects, stream monitoring, litter clean-ups, storm drain marking, day camps, wildlife projects, and other activities.  Stream Team is jointly funded by the storm and surface water utilities of Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater, and Thurston County.

How To Get Involved
Anyone in the south Puget Sound area is welcome to join the team.  To learn more about being a Stream Team volunteer, check out the Stream Team website or call (360) 438-2687 and leave your name, address, and phone number.
