Trail History
In 2002, the City of Lacey acquired a former Georgia Pacific rail line for $369,000 of city funds, and in 2005 a Burlington Northern Rail Line under a rail banking agreement with $410,279 of city funds to convert it into a rail-trail. The city obtained a $410,279 grant from the Washington State Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation to aid in the acquisition.
By 2006, Burlington Northern removed the railroad tracks and the first phase of the Lacey Woodland Trail was officially underway, with installation of approximately one mile of 10-foot-wide paved trail surface for walkers and bicyclists. This phase was funded with $132,573 of city funds, and $229,900 of grant funds.
In 2009, the City of Lacey had another mile under construction with $867,000 of Surface Transportation Program grant funding from WSDOT, $445,000 in Federal Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development funding, and $1million of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from the Federal Highway Administration.
The 2.2-mile trail connects the Chehalis-Western Trail and the Olympia Woodland Trail to Woodland Creek Community Park. Eventually, Phase 3 will extend to State Route 510 (the old Pacific Highway) and the future McAllister Community Park.
