 4218 Police Officer - Lateral

 

Salary: $63,285 - $79,297 (2012 annual base salary), plus a generous benefit package
Status: Full-time; This is a Police Guild represented position.
Closing Date: Continuous opening. Oral boards are usually held quarterly.


THE POSITION

 

Officers are responsible for prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the general enforcement of laws and ordinances. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to act decisively and without direct supervision in a number of situations, including situations involving an element of personal danger. The City of Lacey has a full service police department with 57 Commissioned Officers, 3 Community Service Officers, and 12 civilian personnel.

Assigned to specialized functions such as:

  • Crime Detection/Apprehension
  • Traffic Unit
  • Detectives
  • Crime Prevention
  • School Resource (SRO)
  • Tactical Unit
  • Community Policing
  • Crime Stoppers
  • Interlocal Drug Unit
  • Bike Patrol
  • Canine Unit

SELECTION CRITERIA

 

Establishment of the eligibility list shall be based on the combined results of the supplemental application and oral interview. In addition, applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass a thorough background investigation including: work history, driving record, credit history, conviction/arrest record, drug history, and reference checks. Screening may be conducted both before and after the establishment of the eligibility list. An applicant may be removed from the eligibility list at any time for failure to pass the pre-employment interview, background investigation or physical fitness assessment.

Note: Successful candidates will be integrated by score with other candidates currently on the eligibility list.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

The qualified applicant will have/be:

  • U.S. Citizen (proof required at time of appointment)
  • High School Graduate
  • 21 years of age or older at time of appointment
  • Ability to read and write the English language

Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license at time of application, and must be able to obtain a valid Washington State driver's license at time of appointment.

Must have been employed as a sworn law enforcement officer within the last 12 months with a minimum of one year of continuous experience as a full-time commissioned police officer.

Graduation from the Washington Training Commission Basic Academy. Applicants who have graduated from an accredited law enforcement academy in another State must pass the Washington State Equivalency Examination within 12 months of hire.

Successful candidates must undergo medical, psychological and polygraph examinations. Candidates must also successfully pass the WA State Basic Law Enforcement Academy physical fitness assessment prior to actual appointment as a condition of employment. Incumbent must maintain a level of physical fitness necessary to perform the duties and functions of a Police Officer.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

 

Those applications scoring the highest on the supplemental application will be invited to an oral interview. Oral Boards and screening will be held on a quarterly basis.

Candidates who fail any portion of the exams or screening process, or do not appear for any scheduled examination will be disqualified.

COMPENSATION

 

$63,285 - $79,297 (2012 annual base salary). Starting salary contingent on breadth as well as length of experience and qualifications.

All Police Officers are covered by the Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters Fund (LEOFF II). The City has an excellent fringe benefits plan which provides life insurance, disability insurance and a generous employer contribution for medical, dental and vision coverage. There are 11 paid holidays per year and generous paid sick and vacation leave benefits. Officers do not pay into social security and receive the City's contribution, which is added to base salary. The Department works 10.5-hour days; 5-4 / 5-4 / 5-5 work schedule. Officers with formal educational are eligible for educational premium pay and longevity pay begins after 10 years of service. This is a Police Guild represented position.
