CODE ENFORCEMENT


The Code Enforcement Division performs general City code enforcement with the purpose of preserving community standards and for the protection of community health, welfare and quality of life.  City codes and standards applying to housing, structures, property maintenance and zoning and land use are enforced in a responsible, courteous and impartial manner.  The Code Enforcement Office also administers the City's Residential Building Rental Registration Program.

 

Enforcement action is typically complaint-initiated.  When a complaint is received, the enforcing officer investigates the validity of the complaint and undertakes the necessary actions until all issues are resolved.

 

 

Issues commonly addressed by this office include:

 

  • Property maintenance, including accumulations of trash, waste, debris, appliances and junk on private property (Lacey Municipal Code 9.52);
  • Substandard, derelict, or dangerous buildings and structures (Lacey Municipal Code 14.16);
  • Junk vehicles (Lacey Municipal Code 9.52);
  • Zoning/land use violations, including building setbacks (Lacey Municipal Code Title 16); home occupations (Lacey Municipal Code 16.69); tree removal (Lacey Municipal Code 14.32); recreational vehicle storage and use/outdoor storage (Lacey Municipal Code 16.57); animals on residential property (Lacey Municipal Code Title 7 and Lacey Municipal Code 16.12); and businesses operating without City registration (Lacey Municipal Code 5.12);
  • Use of unapproved signs and illegal sign placements (Lacey Municipal Code 16.75);
  • Housing code and living standards violations (Lacey Municipal Code 14.04);
  • Construction activities without necessary building permits (Lacey Municipal Code 14.04);
  • Garbage and refuse storage and disposal violations (Lacey Municipal Code 8.04); and
  • Noise violations (Lacey Municipal Code 9.24 and Lacey Municipal Code 16.57).

 

Common concerns handled by other City divisions:


  • Problems or concerns regarding public right-of-way, such as street or sidewalk obstructions, missing signs, and potholes, should be referred to the City of Lacey Public Works Operations Division at (360) 491-5644, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • To report vehicles parked illegally within the right-of-way, or to report suspected criminal activity or activity which disturbs the public peace, contact the City of Lacey Police Department at (360) 459-4333, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • For specific questions pertaining to buildings and construction, contact the City of Lacey Building Department at (360) 491-5642, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
